INTRODUCTION

The price of virgin PET has been on a nearly uninterrupted decline for 17 months, and there is no indication that the short-term trend is likely to change.

The rate of €450/mt, which primarily penalizes virgin polymers, and the gradual penetration of reprocessed polymers are undermining the productive capacities of manufacturers and consequently their profitability levels.

In the case of PET, we are already witnessing non-technical production halts, and some producers are announcing closures of virgin PET plants.

The inevitable penetration of recycled PET, in varying percentages, is prompting virgin producers themselves to consider the production of recycled PET to offset the loss of market share. Today, almost all of them are already producing rPET, and those who are not are in the process of doing so in the short term.
